SGtech Receives Educational and Research Equipment: “Power Hardware-in-the-Loop Real-Time Power System Simulator,” Enhancing Pedagogical and International-Standard Research Capabilities
On October 2, 2026, Associate Professor Dr. Sakda Somkun, representing the SGtech, formally accepted the delivery of educational and research equipment: the Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) Real-Time Power System Simulator, concurrently hosting a foundational operational training session for personnel, students, and researchers conducted by a team of expert engineers at the SEPCON Laboratory.
The handover of this advanced technological equipment marks a pivotal milestone in upgrading the SGtech’s research laboratories and instructional infrastructure, geared toward accommodating control system testing at international benchmarks, as well as advancing pedagogy and organizational management across the following dimensions:
• Smart Grid Technology Program: Employed to simulate the operation of intelligent electrical networks (Smart Grids/Microgrids) and evaluate control algorithms for inverters, solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at the nanosecond resolution. It is capable of simulating power grids to facilitate the validation of power system control and protection architectures—such as microgrid control systems, Virtual Power Plants (VPP), cybersecurity assessments, and IEC 61850-compliant substation protection schemes.
• Smart City Management and Digital Innovation Program: Utilized to validate electronic control units (ECUs) and Battery Management Systems (BMS) for electric vehicles (EVs), EV charging infrastructure, and to assess cybersecurity within municipal electrical infrastructure in compliance with the IEC 61850 standard.
• Integrating sophisticated automation technology into instructional and research design, thereby mitigating empirical hazards and operational discrepancies inherent in physical testing.
• Cultivating hands-on pedagogical exposure to industrial-grade apparatus within an entirely secure, hazard-free environment.
• Knowledge and innovation management—serving as a critical knowledge asset to propel frontier and globally competitive research.
• Upskilling and reskilling academic faculty and research personnel to enhance institutional competency.
